The St Anthony's Primary Girraween school community has raised an impressive $1487 to support the efforts of Mercy Works!
As part of the celebrations for Mercy Day this year, students engaged in a range of activities, topped off by a Mercy Market Day fundraising event organised by Year 6. Mercy Day is a day that unites people from all over the world to celebrate the opening of the first 'House of Mercy' by Catherine McAuley 193 years ago.
To begin the day, a cheery room of Year 6 students Zoomed straight into the Board Room of Mercy Works for a Q&A session about what Mercy Day is all about, as well as viewing a video that told the story of Mercy Works.
Mercy Works supports the local and overseas relief and development activities that are part of the vision and mission of the Institute of Sisters of Mercy in Australia and Papua New Guinea. The programs engage in partnerships with communities to promote justice, self reliance and to support displaced people and communities who are denied access to basic resources such as education, health care and social welfare. Mercy Works programs strongly endorse the principles of freedom, mutual respect, environmental sustainability, participation and protection of the rights and responsibilities of all.
The students then transitioned into their Mercy Day activities, starting with the St Ant's Can Dance, where each grade performed a showcase item, as well as Mercy Awards and the Mercy Market Day, which involved raising money in the form of bake sales, sideshow games, activities and more.
The day was wrapped up with a final celebration of the Word, in which children returned to their learning spaces to reflect on the meaning of Mercy Day
Technology has bridged many gaps in its existence but for the better part of this year it has been keeping all of us connected when we couldn’t physically see each other.
The Zoom meeting with Mercy Works would not have been possible without the incredible support of the teaching staff at St Anthony’s.
The St Anthony's learning community have always been very supportive of Mercy Works and the money raised will help support and fund projects focused on education and health both here in Australia and overseas in Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea.

Competing against students from Years 4–6, Kylo demonstrated determination, resilience and sportsmanship in extremely cold and wet conditions. Despite the challenging course, he played some outstanding golf and represented our school with pride throughout the day. At St Anthony's, we love seeing our students embrace opportunities to challenge themselves, strive for personal excellence and represent our community with integrity. Year 1 Explore Living Things at Featherdale Wildlife Park 🐨🦘 On Monday, our Year 1 students enjoyed an exciting excursion to Featherdale Sydney Wildlife Park as part of their Science unit on Living Things. ✨ St Anthony’s Feast Day Celebration ✨ Yesterday we came together to celebrate the Feast Day of St Anthony of Padua. We began our day with a special prayer, reflecting on St Anthony’s example of faith, kindness, service and care for all of creation. Students then moved into their house colours and participated in four meaningful rotations, exploring the Franciscan way through music, creation, reflection and prayer. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn, connect and celebrate the values that St Anthony shared with us. Today, some of our Faith in Action students put Scripture into practice by welcoming Christ through welcoming others. They spent time with the St Anthony of Padua Craft Group, sharing stories, laughter, and skills across generations. It was a wonderful opportunity to build connections and experience the joy of community. We look forward to continuing to share Christ’s peace and hospitality with others throughout the term.

🐼🐧🐆 Year 1 Scientists at Work! 🐆🐧🐼 Our Year 1 students have been busy exploring the Living World strand of Science, investigating the features and needs of living things. As part of their learning, they researched fascinating animals including cheetahs, penguins and pandas, gathering facts about their habitats, diets, behaviours and unique characteristics. Students then applied their learning by creating detailed information reports and labelled diagrams, helping them communicate scientific information clearly and accurately. This allowed them to demonstrate their understanding of how living things grow, survive and interact with their environments. To celebrate their learning, our Year 1 students shared their work with their Year 6 buddies. The older students provided thoughtful peer feedback, highlighting strengths and offering helpful suggestions to make the reports even better. It was wonderful to see students learning together, supporting one another and growing in confidence as communicators. The chess team represented St Anthony's proudly in another interschool heat competition organised by the Sydney Academy of Chess. ♟️ We faced some tough competition and learnt from our experiences.
